QUEBEC MINISTRY OF HEALTH AWARDS ZOLL CONTRACT TO EQUIP ALL AMBULANCES WITH E SERIES DEFIBRILLATORS

Agreement Marks First Province-Wide Contract

March 9, 2009CHELMSFORD, Mass.—ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and related software solutions, announced today that the Ministry of Health for the Province of Quebec has awarded ZOLL a contract valued in excess of $12 million to equip all ambulances in Canada’s largest geographical province with the ZOLL E Series® defibrillator. This represents the first time that the Province of Quebec will standardize its entire system to one model of defibrillator.

About 700 E Series defibrillators, along with CPR stat•padz®, will be purchased under the terms of the contract, which marks the largest agreement to date ever received by ZOLL in Canada. The transition to ZOLL will be made region by region, 16 regions in total, with the first order already having been placed by Urgences-Santé, the EMS provider for the city of Montreal.

By standardizing on the ZOLL E Series, the province’s medical directors will now be able to use and compare similar patient data. During the clinical evaluation, the E Series scored the highest in the areas of data review and transmission. Real CPR Help® feedback technology and See-Thru CPR® were also cited as positive features for the delivery of high-quality CPR and reducing interruptions respectively.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services, in its desire to increase the quality of services offered in pre-hospital care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest, wanted to standardize its resuscitation technologies by offering advanced, high-performance equipment. The level of care that will be offered will be compatible with the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Guidelines that place significant emphasis on CPR.

“ZOLL’s core focus is improving survival rates from SCA, and we’re extremely pleased that the government of Quebec recognizes how our advanced technology features in the E Series can help make that contribution possible,” said Richard A. Packer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL.

The ZOLL E Series is designed to meet the specific demands and extreme conditions that professional rescuers face every day. The E Series offers multiple data transmission options to a variety of destinations, including transmission of 12-lead ECGs to hospitals, which international guidelines now recommend for out-of-hospital use to help reduce time to perfusion in S-T segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients.

Real CPR Help in all of ZOLL’s devices instantly provides first responders and advanced paramedics with technology to see how well they are performing the rate and depth of CPR chest compressions. See-Thru CPR® helps them minimize interruptions in CPR that effect resuscitation success.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest

SCA is an abrupt disruption of the heart’s function, causing a loss of blood flow to vital organs. It claims more than 1 million lives each year worldwide, making it the leading cause of death. SCA often strikes without warning, and currently only about 5 percent of victims survive. Recent improvements in the Chain of Survival, including improved CPR and post-resuscitation hypothermia, hold the promise of improved outcomes.

Life saver installed at pool

QUEANBEYAN began its defibrillator roll out this week with the first Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) unit, costing around $3000, deployed at the Queanbeyan Aquatic Centre.

Aquatic Centre staff trained with the new piece of equipment on Tuesday, with the aim of significantly increasing the chance of survival for those who slip into cardiac arrest.

Queanbeyan City Council identified the Aquatic Centre in October as the highest priority location for the life saving technology with a view to install several other units across town in areas like The Q, the Customer Service Centre and the Conference Centre.

Australian Defibrillators spokesperson Paul Jones said the current survival rate outside of hospital for sudden cardiac arrest is less than five per cent and the devices would be used in the crucial 10 minute window before help arrived.

“The most successful treatment for cardiac arrest is defibrillation within the first three-five minutes of the event which can increase the chances of survival from less than five per cent to above 70 per cent,” he said.

“Unfortunately CPR alone is not enough, however combined with early defibrillation it can dramatically increase the victim’s chances of survival.”

Mr Jones said the AED’s, which are also used by the NSW Ambulance and Fire Brigade, have cardiac pulmory resuscitation (CPR) sensors in the pads and tells the Leg 1 rescuer what to do. “We use the AED for public access defibrillation because it’s the world’s first and only full rescue AED,” he said.

The AED diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia and treats the person through defibrillation. Rather than starting the heart, the defibrillator actually stops the arrhythmia in the heart and allows the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm.

Mr Jones said the portable device saved a life this year when a boy at a Botany Bay swimming carnival went into sudden cardiac arrest. He said once people were trained in the operation of the new defibrillators it was all about making the town heart safe. “We get defibrillators across the town, every shopping centre, all the clubs, and we train them all up on how to use them so the whole town becomes heart safe.”

While the defibrillators are simple to operate, he said only those who had been trained would use them rather than the general public.

Queanbeyan City Council mayor Tim Overall, who is familiar with defibrillator technology from his days in the NSW Ambulance Service, said deploying the devices was an important initiative for Queanbeyan.

“The response time to resuscitate either through mouth-to-mouth and or defibrillator is critical. The critical time period is within a period of four minutes, that’s when you are likely to get a more positive response. Beyond that time it gets more difficult and more complex.” “This is an important and potentially life saving initiative. I’m very familiar with the importance of having defibrillators in places where they may well need to be used in emergencies having been previously chief executive of the NSW Ambulance Service,” he said.

“For the staff of the pool to have immediate access to this equipment is potentially life saving in case of an emergency.”

Council manager customer services and communications Paul Spyve said the Aquatic Centre, in terms of being a priority, was seen as ideal. With regard to other defibrillators being deployed around town, he said another meeting would take place before deciding on further priorities.

Tenterfield now a Heartsafe Community

Tenterfield is showing just how serious it is about saving lives, training over 70 members of the community on Friday how to use five new automatic external defibrillators located across the town.

The Tenterfield Bowling Club and Tenterfield Golf Club hosted the training sessions on Friday morning, demonstrating the use of the new Zoll AED machines with an overwhelmingly positive response from those present.

“The demonstration was absolutely fantastic, everybody who saw it was more than happy with the machines. I am absolutely rapt with how easy it is; it tells you everything,” instigator of the project Dr Ian Unsworth said.

The defibrillators will be housed at the golf club, bowling club, swimming pool, School of Arts and with the SES. Dr Unsworth has been the driving force behind the project and said he was not expecting to have five defibrillators installed.

“It’s one thing to have an idea like this, but it takes a lot more to get that idea into reality. I am rapt with the coverage we have now got,” he said.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we are one of the safest towns in New South Wales or even Australia. We have defibrillators with the ambulance and the fire service along with the five we have now bought. There are seven defibrillators in a town this size; I think if you’re going to have a sudden cardiac arrest, Tenterfield is the place.

“The population in Tenterfield is going to swell with an elderly influx as more move from the coast and I think the defibrillators will make Tenterfield very community friendly.”

Tenterfield Golf Club secretary manager Wayne Koppel said he was impressed with the demonstration of the machine.

“I was amazed at how easy it was to use. It talks to you and everything, it even tells you to stay calm. There is a screen that updates as it progresses so people a bit hard of hearing can follow too. You could pick it up and use it even if you haven’t been shown how” he said.

“It’s peace of mind in case something happens here. The golf club is isolated and there is often a lot of aged people here, the feedback so far is that it is a good thing.”

Tenterfield Bowling Club manager Ben Brown said the machines were particularly useful because the electro pads used with the portable defibrillators were also compatible with the equipment used by the ambulance and fire service.

“The machines are compatible with the defibrillators in the ambulance too, so if somebody is getting treated and an ambulance comes they can just leave the pads on and keep using them. It’s very useful because if you have to change the pads it can be very hard to get the second pads to stick, apparently,” he said.
Tenterfield swimming pool manager Jeff Moss said that keeping a defibrillator machine at the pool would be a great addition to the facilities and to the town.

“I think the machines will be a massive addition to Tenterfield. They are a very good thing, people should embrace them but they should also be trained in CPR,” he said.

“It’s great to have the sense that you have everything at your disposal to help save a person’s life.”

Nambucca now a “Heartsafe” Community

as Life-saving defibrillators fitted at local pubs, clubs

Efforts to raise funds for a defibrillator for the Nambucca Heads Sports and Leagues Club have been hailed a complete success by the local Jump Start Restart Committee.

It was a great achievement for our small committee to reach our goal and then exceed expectations, when they launched an appeal to buy a Zoll AED Plus defibrillator for use at the playing fields of Coronation Park.
The result came through the hard work and support of all the sporting bodies that use the fields, along with Lions, Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, Frank Partridge High School, the local caravan park, the Nambucca Heads Surf Club and NSW ambulance service which also uses Zoll defibrillators.

There was great public support from patrons at the V-Wall Tavern, from raffles at the Leagues Club, tins on the counter at many local stores and other business house and personal donations.

The result of such overwhelming support was: a machine based at the Leagues and Sports Club; another at the V-Wall Tavern; one at the Island Golf Club; and the group is in process of assisting the Bowling Club to up-grade their older machine

Before the end of the year they may be able to supply one for the main street of Nambucca Heads, to be based at the Golden Sands Tavern,”

Australian Defibrillators was proud to supply the Jump Start Restart Committee with the Zoll AED Plus defibrillators.

Largest Public AED Deployment in China

May 7, 2008—CHELMSFORD, Mass. — ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and related software solutions, announced today that the Beijing Airport Group has selected the ZOLL AED Plus® to be installed in the Beijing Capital International Airport’s newly-built Terminal 3, the largest single airport building in the world. Plans call for the installation of 80 AED Plus units at Terminal 3, the gateway terminal for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, which is expected to welcome 55.6 million passengers to the summer games.

The ZOLL AED Plus is the first and only full-rescue AED that provides Real CPR Help® for rate and depth of chest compressions. It guides rescuers through the complete Chain of Survival, helping all sudden cardiac arrest victims, not just those who need a shock. The AED Plus features ZOLL’s unique one-piece electrode for fast and accurate placement and is powered by Lithium camera batteries available from retail stores.

The Beijing International Airport AED project is the first large public AED deployment project in China. The project marks a milestone for public access defibrillators in China. Before this project, 15 AED Plus units were deployed in Terminal 2 in 2007, setting a new standard for public safety devices in China and sparking a public demand for more AEDs in public places, such as airports, railway systems, shopping centers, and community centers.

As part of the project, the AED Plus will also be installed in several other major airports in China, which are also managed by the Beijing Airport Group, including Taiyuan and Wuhan Airports. The ZOLL AED Plus is also being deployed in the airport ambulances and emergency centers. Beijing Airport Group plans to rapidly expand its AED installed base to about 500 units. Given the large size of Beijing International, that expansion will take a few years.

“We’re extremely pleased that ZOLL AEDs will save the lives of SCA victims in China and will be highly visible in this landmark building to all visitors who come through the terminal,” said Richard A. Packer, President and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL. “Our Real CPR Help technology in the AED Plus, along with its graphical interface, can greatly assist the infrequent rescuer through the Chain of Survival in the event an arrest occurs.” To date, approximately 150,000 AED Plus units have been deployed in 26 languages worldwide.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest

The human toll from SCA is alarming with more than 1 million deaths occurring annually worldwide. It is the leading cause of unexpected death in the world and strikes without warning. Currently, only about 5 percent of victims survive; 95 percent will die from SCA. SCA is an abrupt disruption of the heart’s function, which causes a lack of blood flow to vital organs.
